SMS Personalization Overview

Personalization replaces a data field in a general message with specific information for each recipient, making the message more relevant (e.g., "Hi, John, check out our new offers!" instead of "Hi, check out our new offers!").

Here's an overview of the whole process of creating customized messages and where it applies:

  1. Create Data Fields: When creating a new contact list or adding new contacts, you can include fields such as First Name and Last Name. You can also create any other custom data fields you need (e.g., "Age" or "Reference Number"). See Create Custom Data Fields to learn more.
  2. Add the Information: You have two main ways to populate these data fields with your recipients' data:
    • Manual Entry: Add information to the data fields when creating a new contact manually. See Contacts Overview to learn more about adding new contacts.
    • Importing a List: To efficiently create or update an extensive list of contacts, upload a CSV/TSV file or paste structured information from a spreadsheet. See Add a Contact Manually to learn more about adding contacts in bulk.
  1. Insert Field: When composing your SMS, select the desired field (which may appear as a variable such as [FirstName]  ) from the Available Fields. This dynamically inserts the recipient's information into the message.

The actual length of your message is determined only after the personalized data is inserted for each person. If the final personalized message exceeds the character limit for a single SMS, the system will automatically split it into multiple SMS.
