Create Custom Data Fields for a Contact List
Custom data fields let you store additional information about contacts, such as city, age, or customer type. These fields can be used as placeholders when composing personalized SMS messages and can also be included when importing contacts into a contact list.
Custom fields are always created per contact list. Adding a field in one list does not make it available in other lists.
Follow these steps to create custom data fields for a specific contact list:
- Go to Contact Lists.
- Select the contact list you want to work with.
- Click the Edit Fields tab.
- Select + Add Field.
- Enter a Field Name and select a Type.
-
Select Create Field to save.

The new field is now available for all contacts within this contact list.
Using custom fields
All fields added in the Edit Fields tab are available for personalization when composing an SMS. See Send an SMS to learn more.
After creating a field, you can:
- Enter values manually for individual contacts.
- Include the field when importing contacts into this contact list using a CSV or TSV file.
- Use the field for personalization when composing an SMS.
- Custom fields belong only to the contact list where they are created.
- Fields created in one contact list are not available in other lists.
- Adding or editing fields does not affect other contact lists or the Phonebook.
To define fields while setting up a list, see Create and Manage a Contact List.
